Green Mountain Trail #21

Trailhead sign at General Hitchcock campground

This 4.5-mile trail is a workout with long views. The lower part is beautifully forested, but most of the forest on the east side of Green Mountain is burned off.

Difficulty: Except for a few flat sections, the trail alternately climbs or drops steeply. On the west side of Bear Saddle, erosion has made constructed steps very tall; trail workers have installed intermediary steps at some but not all of these difficult spots. On the east side of the saddle, there is loose gravel on the steep sections.

Current Condition (May 2024): The trail is well brushed out. The tread is mostly pretty bad (see “Difficulty” section above).

Connecting Trails: Incinerator Ridge Trail #18A on the north end, Bug Spring Trail #10 on the south end, Brush Corral Trail #19 heading east, Brush Corral Shortcut #21A making a loop from #19 back to #21, Maverick Spring Trail #704, and Guthrie Mountain Trail #704A.

Directions: The south end of the trail starts at Middle Bear picnic area, where parking is free. From there, it’s a half-mile hike near the highway to a junction with a spur from the General Hitchcock campground. You have to pay to park inside the gate to the campground. There is one unpaved pull-out a little below the campground entrance where you can park beside the highway.

The north end of the trail can be reached from either the Green Mountain Trailhead or San Pedro Vista.

Green Mountain Trail in Pictures…

Starting from the General Hitchcock campground, the trail drops sharply into the wash next to an abandoned water trough.
